How FFL Transfers Work

Bought a firearm online? Here's exactly what to do.

Federal law requires that firearms purchased online or from an out-of-state seller be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer near you — who then completes the transfer on your behalf. The process is straightforward once you know the steps.

The Process

  1. Contact us before you buy

Reach out before completing your purchase. We'll send you a copy of our FFL license to provide to the seller and confirm our receiving address. This takes five minutes and prevents a lot of headaches.

  2. Seller ships to us

The retailer or private seller ships your firearm directly to Heavy Metal Hardware. We'll contact you as soon as it arrives.

  3. Come in for pickup

Schedule an appointment for pickup. Bring a valid government-issued ID with your current North Carolina address. You'll complete ATF Form 4473 and, if required, a NICS background check. The whole process typically takes 15–30 minutes.

  4. You're done

Once your background check clears, your firearm is yours.

Transfer Fees

$20

With NC Concealed Handgun Permit

CHP holders are exempt from the NICS background check requirement, which keeps the process faster and the fee lower.

$30

Without NC Concealed Handgun Permit

Includes the $10 NICS background check fee. Required for all transfers where a CHP is not presented.

NFA Transfers

We are a Class 3 SOT, meaning we can handle NFA transfers — suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), short-barreled shotguns (SBSs), and other regulated items.

NFA transfers involve additional ATF paperwork (Form 4) and a longer wait time — currently several months for most items depending on ATF processing times. The process on our end is the same; the wait is on ATF's side. Contact us for NFA transfer fees and details.

Common Questions

Can any FFL receive my transfer?

Yes — you choose your FFL, not the seller. We're happy to receive transfers from any licensed online retailer or private seller.

What ID do I need?

A valid, government-issued photo ID showing your current North Carolina address. A NC driver's license works perfectly. If you're presenting a CHP for the reduced fee, bring that as well.

What if I fail the background check?

The firearm is returned to the sender. Transfer fees are non-refundable as the work has already been completed on our end.

How long does pickup take?

Most transfers are processed same-day once the firearm arrives. NICS checks are typically instant, though occasionally they're delayed 1–3 business days.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes — we operate by appointment. Contact us to schedule once you've been notified your firearm has arrived.
